The Brookline Parks and Open Space Division is seeking an experienced arborist to join our team as the Forestry Zone Manager . The Parks and Open Space Division of the Department of Public Works maintains a network of beautiful parks and open spaces. Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) - Offers building and landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore manages by the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.

 

Position Summary:
 

Performs all aspects of landscape maintenance and construction, including, but not limited to organic and conventional care and maintenance of turf, trees, shrubs, and annuals throughout the University.

Position Description

1. Interpret soil analysis; develops amendment strategies; modifies organic landscape maintenance programs to achieve desired results.
2. Performs all aspects of composting operation, including: material sourcing, transportation, integration, gestation oversight (agitation and aeration), and liquidation of nutrient sources for use in spray applications.
3. Performs ongoing maintenance of landscape systems, including: aeration, fertilization, renovation (seeding and sodding) of turf; pruning, removal, cabling and treatment applications (organic and/or conventional fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides) for trees and shrubs; and routine maintenance of irrigation systems.
4. Reviews and comments on landscape design and development plans with particular emphasis on sustainability and maintenance.
5. Interprets landscape construction drawings and plans; stakes out ground plans, organizes tasks; may perform installation work independently or as part of a larger team.
6. Installs and maintains annual / perennial gardens and display containers including fertilization and treatment programs.
7. Performs winter care program for trees and shrubs including: dormant pruning, anti-desiccant spraying and securing of specimens susceptible to winter damage.
8. May oversee property maintenance workers as assigned.
9. Perform other duties as required

Basic Qualifications

• Minimum five years experience in landscape installation and maintenance, a thorough knowledge of all aspects of turf care, with specialized training in horticulture and/or arboriculture. 
• Minimum three years experience maintaining proper soil conditions and caring for gardens, planting beds and trees using only non-toxic methods for soil preparation and organic maintenance practices.

• Must be able to accurately identify and treat weeds, diseases, insects, and other environmental stresses to the landscape.

Responsibilities:

• Helps manage the maintenance and care of municipal trees in public ways and City owned Parks, cemeteries, and other public open spaces. 
• Monitors activities related to planting, watering, pruning, pest control, removals, warranties, and storm response.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

• Three to Five (3-5) years of progressively responsible experience in arboriculture, either at the municipal or commercial level.
• Certification as an Arborist by either the Massachusetts Arborist Association or by the International Society of Arboriculture. 
• Massachusetts Driver’s License Required.
• Proficiency and knowledge of tree planting including stock selection, site preparation, tree installation, and required aftercare.
• Working knowledge of practices and equipment associated with the maintenance and care of trees and shrubs, particularly those common in the Northeastern United States.
• Knowledge of ANSI A-300, Z-133 and Z60.1 standards of practice & operation
• Proficiency in written and verbal communication
• Four year degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field preferred.
• Proficiency in public speaking and community relations preferred.
• Knowledge and familiarity with municipal government operations preferred. 
• Ability to work independently on routine tasks and manage recurring project cycles.

The Town of Wellesley is looking for a full-time Foreman A/Tree Care for the Parks Division of the Department of Public Works. Within the DPW, the Park and Tree Division is responsible for the maintenance of all Town park land, conservation land, open spaces, athletic fields, active and passive recreation areas and all Town-owned trees. The incumbent will perform a variety of arboricultural tasks to manage the Town’s urban forest, open spaces, and right-of-ways for communication and electrical lines without direct supervision. The incumbent also supervises one or more crews consisting of skilled and/or unskilled workers engaged in tree maintenance and performs skilled tasks for other DPW divisions and Town departments as assigned. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is a 281-acre museum of trees teaching the world about plants. With one of the world's most biodiverse collections of temperate woody plants, combined with world-class scientific resources, and a commitment to diverse programming, the Arnold Arboretum has been a leader in horticulture since its founding in 1872. As part of the Boston Parks system, it is free and open to all daily; we host three to four million visitors each year.

Description

The Arnold Arboretum offers paid internships in collections management with concentrations in arboriculture, collections curation, horticulture and landscape maintenance, or plant production. Experiences integrate hands-on training with educational classes and visits to other botanical institutions. Interns are accepted for 12- to 14-week appointments (typically late-May through early-August). The Arboretum seeks a dynamic and diverse group of individuals to fill nine (9) internship positions for summer 2024. All positions are full-time (40 hours/week) at a rate of $20 per hour.

Internships are available with the following concentrations:

Horticulture and Landscape Maintenance

Working with the horticulture staff, summer interns weed, mulch, mow, plant, prune, scout and monitor plant pests and diseases, operate a wide range of maintenance equipment, and perform other associated tasks as part of caring for the Arboretum’s 281 acres. All interns rotate through various collections and gardens within the landscape, obtaining experience with diverse types of plant material, as well as getting opportunities to learn from many horticulture staff members. In addition, each intern will spend time with the arborist crew, focusing on pruning skills, chainsaw use, and tree climbing. Applicants should have some experience in landscape maintenance and an interest in exploring career paths in public horticulture.

Plant Production

Staff members at the Dana Greenhouses and Nursery propagate and grow all the plant material that is eventually planted into the permanent collections of the Arboretum. Interns are introduced to the nursery and greenhouse production cycle and assist in watering, weeding, mulching, potting, and other jobs as required. The work varies from physical labor to technical work, with emphasis on proper growing methods. This internship also gives an overview of our accessioning and plant inventory process, including an introduction to BG-BASE (collections management software). Applicants should have some experience in plant propagation and/or greenhouse operations.

Curation

The Curatorial Department administers record-keeping and documentation projects for all living and legacy plant collections, directs acquisition and collection development initiatives, and facilitates the use of the collection by scholars. Of central importance is the annual inventory or field checking of the nursery and roughly a fifth of the living collections. The curatorial intern spends the bulk of their time assisting staff in inventorying the living collections, which includes plant health assessments, mapping, and labeling. Additionally, time is spent collecting voucher herbarium specimens representing Arboretum accessions, sorting herbarium specimens in the Herbarium of Cultivated Plants, and entering archival data to curatorial databases. Interns will receive considerable training in BG-BASE (collections management software). Applicants are expected to have strong woody plant identification skills.

Arboriculture (Climbing Arborist)

The arboriculture-focused experience is for those applicants exploring a career path as a climbing arborist. Interns spend their time working alongside the Arboretum’s arborists as they rotate through the collections evaluating plant health and assessing and executing the unique pruning needs of each specimen. This team works on large-scale plant removals, tree hazard assessments and corrective pruning measures, IPM practices, and other tasks as needed as part of the full horticultural operation. Applicants must have some experience in urban forestry or arboriculture and a basic working knowledge of aerial tree care, i.e., climbing.

• Valid Massachusetts core pesticide license preferred.

• Arborist certification preferred but not mandatory.
