About the Opportunity

Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director, the Horticulture & Landscape Supervisor provides leadership and oversight of the daily operations of the university’s grounds staff on the Boston campus. The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring safety, quality, and compliance with university standards while maintaining a landscape that supports and enhances the university’s arboretum. While this position does not perform bargaining unit work, the successful candidate will blend horticultural expertise and leadership skills to guide grounds maintenance operations and preserve the distinctive character of our urban arboretum. This role requires an understanding of the challenges of caring for diverse plant collections as well as a commitment to creating and maintaining outdoor spaces that are reflective of our global university community.

Qualifications & Certifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Landscape Management, Urban Forestry, or closely related field required; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in landscape or grounds maintenance required
Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience managing landscape or grounds crews required
Experience working in urban environments, arboretums, or university settings preferred.

Technical Competencies

Strong knowledge of plant identification and care, particularly woody and perennial species suitable for USDA Zone 6b

Key Accountabilities

Campus Landscape Operations (70%)

Coordinate daily assignments for 8–12 grounds staff, ensuring efficient operations across 11+ acres of campus landscape and hardscape.
Assess work quality, provide training on proper care techniques for trees and plant collections, and support skill-building and professional development.
Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with Northeastern University policies.
Manage and monitor snow removal/weather-related emergency crews, including assigning tasks, inspecting work, and ensuring operational standards are met.
Maintain high-traffic areas and manage snow removal operations to ensure pedestrian safety during New England winters.
Oversee irrigation systems and support water conservation initiatives.
Collaborate with campus departments to support special events and ceremonies and participate in Arbor Day and other arboretum-based educational programs.
Ensure campus grounds consistently meet PGMS Honor Award standards.

Horticultural Excellence (30%)

Oversee maintenance of signature campus features, including the Curry Student Center Koi Pond and Veterans Memorial Gardens.
Plan, manage, and implement seasonal plantings and displays featuring native New England species and international specimens to ensure year-round campus appeal.
Maintain campus ecosystems that support bee hotels and pollinator initiatives.

Duties:

Supervises and works with a small group of journeymen, craftsmen, and/or workers at a lower skill level and/or laborers. Makes work assignments, enforces safety regulations, maintains discipline, orders supplies and equipment and reviews work of the crew assigned to them, during progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions and conformance to accepted trade practices. Operates any piece of motor driven equipment including sweepers, trucks, snow fighters, front end loaders, and backhoes, and other heavy motor equipment in a proper and safe manner in order to perform all assigned work. Loads and unloads trucks; picks up and hauls material, plows and sands highways; greases, oils and cleans equipment and performs minor maintenance; performs unskilled labor duties of which the following are typical examples: digging holes, trenches, and other excavations; shoveling materials and leveling areas; loading and unloading materials; emptying barrels and cleaning litter and debris from streets, runways, parking lots; mowing grass, trimming shrubs/small trees using hand or powered equipment; removing snow/ice using manual or small powered equipment; spreading sand on icy areas; using small hand tools, i.e. shovels, picks, axes, saws, heavy wrenches and small power tools. Performs all other duties that may be assigned.

Qualifications:

An Associate degree in arboriculture or related field and at least two years’ experience climbing trees. (Applicants with a high school diploma/GED and minimum of four years’ experience working in the tree care industry will be considered.) Experience as a ground person does not count toward the required years of experience in the tree care industry.
ISA Certified Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialist preferred. Required within one year of employment.
Current training in aerial rescue, CPR, and first aid preferred.
Ability to receive and interpret written and oral instructions and to give written and oral reports to supervisors.
Ability to prune, brace, cut and fell trees consistent with ANSI Z133 standards.
Ability to identify trees by species, identify hazard defects of trees, and ensure public safety.
Ability to inspect for pests and diseases such as Emerald Ash Borer and Asian Long-Horned Beetle.
Must have ability to use tools of trade in workmanlike manner.
Must be in good health, dependable, and able to do hard physical work. Position requires ability to work extended hours and respond to emergency situations.
