ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  

This position will report to the Reservoir System Manager and supervise skilled laborers, laborers, and contract workers. Responsible for implementing priorities of the Fresh Pond Reservation Master Plan that involve forest/landscape maintenance and improvements at Fresh Pond Reservation and other city-owned properties. Responsible for executing and for field supervision of contractors, staff, and volunteers executing the following tasks: Tree pruning and thinning, invasive species removal, lawn care, irrigation systems maintenance and minor repairs, meadow and wetland maintenance, tree, shrub planting and herbicide/ pesticide/ fertilizer applications, rubbish and graffiti removal. Operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment, such as mowers, tractors, aerators, snow blowers, snow plows, spreaders, hand and power tools, trimmers, chain saws, chippers and sprayers. Work also includes data collection and work tracking using handheld computers.  Performs other relative duties as assigned. Required to work in emergency situations as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidate must have at least two years' experience in landscape maintenance and have considerable knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance and related safety practices; good knowledge of plant and soil types; horticulture and professional landscaping practices; mixing and using landscape chemicals. 
  • Candidate must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Candidate must have a Massachusetts Certified Landscape Professional certification or the ability to obtain this certification within one year of hire.
  • Candidate must have a Massachusetts Pesticide applicator’s license or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment. 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • An associates degree in either, arboriculture, horticulture, turf grass, or landscape management.
  • Hoisting & Engineering license class B.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Physical demands for this position include but are not limited to lifting up to fifty pounds, bending, squatting, and climbing, sitting, standing.  Ability to work outside for long periods of time under adverse weather conditions.
