    The Brookline Parks and Open Space Division is seeking an experienced arborist to join our team as the Forestry Zone Manager . The Parks and Open Space Division of the Department of Public Works maintains a network of beautiful parks and open spaces. The Forestry Zone Manager supervises, identifies, prepares for and implements tree maintenance projects, providing instruction to workers performing similar work, and undertaking appropriate corrective actions as warranted. Performs technical arboriculture work including all phases of manual work related to pruning and maintaining street and park trees and removing hazardous trees. Performs all other related work as required.

    Qualifications:

    High school education required; Associates degree desired; additional technical forestry training preferred; three years of direct experience working as a tree climber and supervising forestry crews; safety training required; experience with pesticides and in maintenance of parks and grounds desirable; at least one year of supervisory experience required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Valid CDL Class B and Hoisting Engineer's License required. First Aid and CPR Training. MA Pesticide Applicators License desirable.

    Job Summary

    Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) - Offers building and landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. As such, FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and therefore manages by the same principles that guide any successful maintenance service business.

     

    Position Summary:
     

    Performs all aspects of landscape maintenance and construction, including, but not limited to organic and conventional care and maintenance of turf, trees, shrubs, and annuals throughout the University.

    Position Description

    1. Interpret soil analysis; develops amendment strategies; modifies organic landscape maintenance programs to achieve desired results.
    2. Performs all aspects of composting operation, including: material sourcing, transportation, integration, gestation oversight (agitation and aeration), and liquidation of nutrient sources for use in spray applications.
    3. Performs ongoing maintenance of landscape systems, including: aeration, fertilization, renovation (seeding and sodding) of turf; pruning, removal, cabling and treatment applications (organic and/or conventional fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides) for trees and shrubs; and routine maintenance of irrigation systems.
    4. Reviews and comments on landscape design and development plans with particular emphasis on sustainability and maintenance.
    5. Interprets landscape construction drawings and plans; stakes out ground plans, organizes tasks; may perform installation work independently or as part of a larger team.
    6. Installs and maintains annual / perennial gardens and display containers including fertilization and treatment programs.
    7. Performs winter care program for trees and shrubs including: dormant pruning, anti-desiccant spraying and securing of specimens susceptible to winter damage.
    8. May oversee property maintenance workers as assigned.
    9. Perform other duties as required

    Basic Qualifications

    • Minimum five years experience in landscape installation and maintenance, a thorough knowledge of all aspects of turf care, with specialized training in horticulture and/or arboriculture. 
    • Minimum three years experience maintaining proper soil conditions and caring for gardens, planting beds and trees using only non-toxic methods for soil preparation and organic maintenance practices.

    • Must be able to accurately identify and treat weeds, diseases, insects, and other environmental stresses to the landscape. 
    • Demonstrated ability to properly climb trees in the performance of aerial removal, pruning, and cabling tasks required. 
    • Must be able to properly operate a variety of equipment and tools including: aerial lifts, chain saws, chippers, mini-excavators, skid loaders, hand mowers, rototillers, rollers, lawn sweepers, leaf blowers, salt spreaders, and various snow removal equipment (e.g., Bombardiers®, snow plows, and throwers). 
    • Must be quality focused and able to communicate with peers and customers, clearly and professionally in English.

    Special Requirements:

    • Must possess and maintain the following as a condition of employment: a valid state driver’s license and satisfactory driving history; a Massachusetts hydraulic hoisting license; a Massachusetts pesticide application license; and a medical examiners certificate of health. 
    • This position is frequently required to work overtime for snow removal and other emergencies and to support University events.

    Under the general supervision of the City Tree Warden and Director of Urban Forestry , the Arborist will support the care, protection and promotion of the urban forest throughout the community, including the City-owned trees, as well as other trees to the extent provided for by law and/or regulation.

    Responsibilities:

    • Helps manage the maintenance and care of municipal trees in public ways and City owned Parks, cemeteries, and other public open spaces. 
    • Monitors activities related to planting, watering, pruning, pest control, removals, warranties, and storm response.
    • Utilizes a work order management system related to arboriculture operations to ensure efficient use of labor, materials and equipment
    • Supports the Tree Warden in developing the scope of work and technical specifications for contracted work, monitor contractor award process and ensure contract compliance.
    • Updates asset management as trees get pruned, planted and removed.
    • Receives and responds to public concerns related to division operations; research and resolve conflicts, engage regular with community groups and activists on tree related issues.
    • Complies with and ensure compliance with Departmental policies and procedures, recommend new policies and procedures or revisions to the same.
    • Assists with coordination during emergency storm events.
    • Performs related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

    • Three to Five (3-5) years of progressively responsible experience in arboriculture, either at the municipal or commercial level.
    • Certification as an Arborist by either the Massachusetts Arborist Association or by the International Society of Arboriculture. 
    • Massachusetts Driver’s License Required.
    • Proficiency and knowledge of tree planting including stock selection, site preparation, tree installation, and required aftercare.
    • Working knowledge of practices and equipment associated with the maintenance and care of trees and shrubs, particularly those common in the Northeastern United States.
    • Knowledge of ANSI A-300, Z-133 and Z60.1 standards of practice & operation
    • Proficiency in written and verbal communication
    • Four year degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field preferred.
    • Proficiency in public speaking and community relations preferred.
    • Knowledge and familiarity with municipal government operations preferred. 
    • Ability to work independently on routine tasks and manage recurring project cycles.
    • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of coworkers and members of the community
    • Ability to exercise sound and professional judgment.
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions typical to the region including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
    • Ability to work indoors in an office environment.
    • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

    The Town of Wellesley is looking for a full-time Foreman A/Tree Care for the Parks Division of the Department of Public Works. Within the DPW, the Park and Tree Division is responsible for the maintenance of all Town park land, conservation land, open spaces, athletic fields, active and passive recreation areas and all Town-owned trees. The incumbent will perform a variety of arboricultural tasks to manage the Town’s urban forest, open spaces, and right-of-ways for communication and electrical lines without direct supervision. The incumbent also supervises one or more crews consisting of skilled and/or unskilled workers engaged in tree maintenance and performs skilled tasks for other DPW divisions and Town departments as assigned. This role is required to exercises independent judgment; ensures proper operation of all equipment and follows all required safety procedures, demonstrates and is accountable for safe work practices; and demonstrates good leadership skills.

    Requirements include the possession of or ability to obtain the following licenses and certifications within twelve months: a valid MA Class B CDL with air brakes endorsements; a valid Hoisting Engineer’s License classes 1B and 2B, Pesticide Applicator’s License, Category #36 tree and ornamentals license; Certified Massachusetts or International Society of Arboriculture (I.S.A.) Arborist; CPR Certification; and Electric Hazards Awareness Program Training. Also required are five years of professional arboricultural working experience, two years of supervisory experience, a good employment record; proficiency in the operation of Class B vehicles; and the ability to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions and use hand and power tools.

    Pay range is $28.39 - $38.12 per hour.
