Familiar Foes in the Landscape: A Review of Common Tree and Shrub Diseases

There are a variety of common and widespread diseases of trees and shrubs in the landscape. Some of these pathogens are capable of causing serious dieback to young and old trees alike, especially those predisposed by cultural problems, environmental stress, and insect feeding. Proper diagnosis can be tricky and requires keen observation of the symptoms and signs exhibited. We’ll review common pathogens, what symptoms and signs to search for in the field, and management suggestions, when applicable. Examples will span hardwoods and conifers including shoot and branch cankering diseases, leaf/needle blights, vascular wilts, root disease and their interaction or dependence on insect pests.
