Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."  – Margaret Mead

Massachusetts Communities Benefit from MAA Arbor Day of Service

The Massachusetts Arborists Association (MAA) held its annual Arbor Day of Service on Friday April 29, 2016. Several hundred professional arborists mobilized and donated more than $250,000 in services such as tree planting, safety pruning and hazard tree removal to communities and non-profit sites in need throughout Massachusetts. This statewide volunteer effort is held annually on Arbor Day to build awareness for proper tree care, as well as the importance of working with trained professionals.

Across the state, small and large teams of professional arborists donated their considerable skills to local communities. More than 40 projects took place at schools, town commons, cemeteries and other public spaces across the state.

In Boston, MAA Past President Greg Mosman, MCA assembled eleven local tree care companies who focused their volunteer efforts at the Muddy River. The group undertook extensive safety pruning of many mature trees found in that section of the city's Emerald Necklace. In Framingham, DPW employees and horticulture students from Keefe Tech High School joined with tree care company volunteers to undertake a wide variety of tree work at well-loved Cushing Park in the center of the city. In Watertown, Butler and Sons Tree Service teamed up with local businesses to create an Arbor Day celebration that, in addition to fine tree work, included hands-on workshops and entertainment for the community. In Western Massachusetts, members undertook projects at Trustees of Reservations properties in Tyringham and Stockbridge and work was performed in Pittsfield at a playground for children with special needs.
